SUNY Cortland observes Latiné Heritage Month, also known as National Hispanic Heritage Month. National observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, and in 1988 federal law designated Hispanic Heritage Month to cover the period from September 15 to October 15. September 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days September 16 and 18, respectively.
