Lecture: Hybrid Modes of Buddhist Mindfulness Practice, presented by Marek Liwoch, Center for Ethics, Peace and Social Justice Department Spring 2024 Fellow and junior researcher, Department of Social and Cultural Studies, Fulda University in Germany, Sperry Center, Room 305, 3 to 4 p.m. Reception to follow in Old Main, Room 138,

Details:

After completing his studies in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Intercultural Communication and European Studies in Germany, Marek Liwoch pursued his idea of investigating the travels of ideas and practices of Buddhist mindfulness practices. Their (re)contextualization in modern social reality represents the central research interest of his PhD project.

By definition, his research delves into the hybrid nature of cultural practice and its spatial, as well as bodily dimensions. In order to discover the qualities of the meditative practice, he is exposing himself to vipassana retreats, as well as pragmatic organizational requirements that arise from catering to a large number of individuals. The reconstructive approach of the project opens perspectives on how various global landscapes of ideas and discourses become embodied in an everyday life practice.
