International Lecture: Language, History and Identity: Acadian Communities in Francophone, Canada, VanHoesen Hall, Room B-0225, 11:30 a.m.

Presented by Anca Cristina Petras, associate professor, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures director, Center for Canadian Studies, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași

Since there is not a province called Acadia (as for Quebec), but several Acadian communities scattered in the Maritime Provinces of Canada and others in the United States, territory is not a defining element of the Acadian identity

Based on a corpus of community radio programs and animated series, the presentation aims at showing how Acadian identity is built through the various media discourses, in what will be a more cultural conception or what some authors refer to as a globalizing discourse, in which language (Acadian French varieties), history, traditions are put forth.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

This event is organized by the Clark Center for Global Engagement and the International Studies Program
