In an increasingly diverse educational landscape, fostering effective literacy development requires an
integrative approach that honors students' cultural backgrounds while utilizing evidence-based
frameworks of teaching reading and writing. If we are to engage with culturally responsive and sustaining
education, it must begin with our students in their rich complexity in terms of identities, cultures, and
experiences. When fused with comprehensive literacy instruction, we can do a better job of ensuring that
every student not only learns to read but belongs and matters within our school communities.
This presentation offers an overview of culturally responsive and sustaining literacy practices that align
with the current movement termed the science of reading. Through a critical examination of current
literacy instruction strategies, we will explore how these practices can create inclusive classrooms that
not only enhance engagement but also support the linguistic and cognitive needs of all learners.
